The role of the administrative professional is evolving with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). Many communities, including content creators, manufacturing, the arts, and administrative support, are feeling apprehensive about the rapid advancement of AI.

Since 1996, I have witnessed how technology has reshaped and redefined the administrative profession. Just as we instinctively move to the sunny side of the street when we feel cold in the shade, we must adapt to these changes.

As AI begins to take over more of our foundational tasks, we must ask ourselves: What can we, as administrative professionals, do? The answer is simple: we can make a conscious decision to step into the light and adapt.

Even as artificial intelligence handles more tasks, organizations cannot function efficiently without strong administrative support. Administrative professionals serve as the bridges and tunnels that connect a vibrant city, the essential infrastructure within an organization. We facilitate information sharing, link teams and key stakeholders, and support the flow of priorities across corporate roadblocks and obstacles.

Like bridges and tunnels, our work often goes unnoticed. However, without administrative support, operations can come to a standstill. We are essential, and we can remain impactful if we adapt and evolve. Our role should extend beyond simply taking messages or completing tasks; we need to become strategic partners who offer insight, continuity, adaptability, and stability to our organizations.

This transformation requires a deliberate effort to step forward and emerge from behind the scenes. We need to recognize key moments when we can expand our influence and assume responsibilities beyond traditional administrative tasks. By embracing strategy, aligning with leadership, collaborating across functions, and influencing operations, we can elevate our value and become indispensable strategic business partners.
